Finished up basic styling with CSS today. Still not thrilled about the button placement, but I'll sort that out once I dig further into flexbox. Also next up, media query review! Updated code here (though codepen doesn't allow media uploads with its free accounts, so the backgrounds and images won't be visible). Today's progress.

I started my coding journey inadvertently in December of 2018, while looking for a fun way to encourage my daughter in the STEM arena. A lifelong Lits lover (with the Lits BA to prove it), I didn't know where to start, but stumbled across code.org and, while testing out the course to make sure it was suitable for her, I discovered that coding was something I wanted to pursue.
I've read a great deal about coding since I've started this journey, much of it very (maybe even a bit too) encouraging ("Anyone can code! Here's how to go from novice to engineer in 6 months!"), but some of it more grounded in a realistic understanding of what it takes to actually make it in the field.
What a difference a month makes! I completed Free Code Camp's Responsive Web Design Course last night with the submission of my Personal Portfolio Page and I'm thrilled.
You know that old saying about life getting in the way? Isn't it funny how life always seems to try its hardest to get in the way of the things you most want to spend your time doing?
I kicked off the final project in Free Code Camp's Responsive Web Design course today: the Personal Portfolio Webpage. Man, was it weird to type "web developer" under my name, because I'm not there yet, but I will be.
A combination of sheer exhausion and the literal dust of the Sahara kept me from blogging for a couple of days, but I never missed a night of coding because I'm determined to hit 100 consecutive days (and I'm also more than a little obsessed).
One of my favorite things about coding is how it feeds into my innate curiosity. There's always something new to learn and the answer you need is surely out there somewhere, if you know where to look and how to phrase the question. Based on what I've read and the podcasts I've been enjoying, it's pretty clear that the one challenge most beginner coders have in common is figuring out where to start.
Part of the problem is that it's pretty tough to know where to start if you don't know where you want to end up, but it's impossible for a newbie to figure that out until they've gotten started. It's an ouroboros of coding confusion and I completely understand why anyone might throw up their hands and walk away before their first console.log('hello world').
