Day One (Again): Back at HTML

One year and three months later, two jobs later, I’m back. I never imagined I’d have to be away so long, but I never let go of the commitment to returning.

Almost two months ago, I resigned from my full-time job (for a variety of critical reasons) and committed to returning to my coding journey with the goal of transitioning into web development.

I did worry throughout the intervening time about how I’d pick things back up when I was finally able to return to my coding journey and, once I’d taken some time to get my daughter through the end of the term and taken a bit of time to recover from the last 15 months, I was a little daunted when I considered where to start.

I started by reviewing some of my notes (I was into my third little notebook when I stopped in the middle of my scatterplot graph for Free Code Camp’s Data Visualisation certificate) to see where I’d left off and figure out where I might be able to jump back in. Honestly, that… wasn’t the best idea. The HTML and CSS notes didn’t look too intimidating but the Javascript, React and Redux sections… Did I ever really understand all of this?!?

I decided to take a step back and make a review plan: I’d run through HTML and CSS again just because I hadn’t touched it in so long before going back to everything else. This time, instead of focusing mainly on tutorials, I’ll start building as I review. That way, when I’m done I should have a nice start to a portfolio.

Instead of redoing the fCC lessons, I’ll try the free Codecademy or Sololearn courses alongside my notes as I go. I’ve also subscribed to a few YouTube channels run by self-taught developers because the imposter syndrome is real and a girl could use some encouragement.

And with that… we’re off!

Day 1: 50% of codecademy’s HTML course, minus the projects as it’s the free version.
